I crocheted myself a black beret, and enjoyed doing it so much that I made a white beret for my daughter. Mine is 10" across, and fits more like a cap with a bit of flare; hers is 11" across, and looks more like a traditional beret.
I've made another black one since, for my son's housemate, and am about to embark on another one this afternoon for a friend.
This is addictive.
